Our Role

Update the distribution model and asset ranking | Delivered in conjunction with Trinnex's parent company, CDM Smith

Securing Urban Water Infrastructure Through Advanced Predictive Modeling and Risk-Based Asset Prioritization

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission partnered with our team to refresh its groundbreaking capital planning system. This project integrates hydraulic modeling with risk-based asset ranking to optimize a 20-year plan for capital and operational improvements, ensuring long-term reliability for over 90,000 accounts.

Managing Aging Infrastructure and Hydraulic Deficiencies Across a Complex Metropolitan Water Network

The Commission maintains 1,018 miles of water mains susceptible to corrosion and failure. Integrating updated GIS data and meter records was essential to address a potential inventory backlog and identify hydraulic vulnerabilities across five distinct pressure zones.

Integrated InfoAsset Planner and InfoWater Risk-Based Modeling Solution

Our team bridges the gap between raw infrastructure data and strategic action by deploying Innovyze InfoAsset Planner and InfoWater software. The process begins by updating the Commission’s GIS database with recent construction records and custom data checks to ensure accuracy. Our team then conducts statistical analysis on historical main break data using the Linear Extended Yule Process model to identify correlations between pipe material, age, and environmental factors. This machine-learning approach generates a statistical probability of failure for every pipe segment. Simultaneously, hydraulic modeling simulates existing and future demand scenarios to determine criticality. These data streams are synthesized into a risk-based prioritization ranking that accounts for both the likelihood and consequence of failure. The result is a dynamic tool that enables the Commission to prioritize high-risk segments and justify infrastructure renewal investments based on measurable, actionable risk.

A Calibrated Capital Planning Framework for Defensible Infrastructure Renewal

This update provides the Commission with a best-in-class capital planning system to visualize goal progression. By digitizing records and using calibrated simulations, the organization can now accurately forecast renewal needs and maintain excellence in core services for its residents.
